Living in Northern Cyprus

Each month Rosy Glow shares her news, personal thoughts and intimate letters on her new life living in Northern Cyprus.

Dear Sis,
The newspapers are telling us that since the collapse of Cyprus Turkish Airways, no mail has left North Cyprus so I hope you received my last letter.  However, we are receiving mail, albeit, boring stuff and no mail from family or friends.  I am beginning to feel like “Billy no-mates!”

What an interesting couple of weeks it has been though, not least that new people are moving onto our estate.  It is really exciting now that we are getting Turkish Cypriots moving in and making the estate more of a community and it gives us an opportunity to practice our limited Turkish.

Another good thing to happen is that, after waiting for 18 months, our next door neighbours are finally getting their swimming pool.  They were supposed to be getting a larger pool than us but the developer has reneged and they are only getting an 8×4 pool which I suppose is better than no pool at all.  It has been fascinating to watch it being built and it is almost ready for the tiling stage.  It should be finished in about 4 to 6 week apparently.   We are delighted for them.

As we are not yet on “the books” of the local Belideye we are not entitled to any sort of maintenance on the estate and hence we have no street lighting as the developer has not paid the bill so last week Rob and I took the bull by the horns and cleared the road into the estate, getting rid of all the weeds.  It took us a total of nine hours but it has been worth every minute of it.  We have a little bit left to do and will do that next week but the estate certainly looks much more inviting now.

We have recently contacted our developer with a view to getting our Deeds (Kocan) by the 1st August but as usual, they fail to respond.  We will visit our solicitor next week to try and get him to push it for us but to be honest, he is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard so we are between a rock and a hard place but we shall continue to plug away.  We are not alone in these frustrations as it is happening to many, many people here and whilst the government promise they will make this process easier, we have no idea of when!

On a brighter note, we recently went, with friends, to a little known restaurant close by called Sinya’s We were the only people there but we had an excellent meal for 4, 8 drinks, coffee and brandy and it all came to TL99 which is a bargain in anyone’s language.  We will certainly go there again.

Whilst the dogs amuse themselves with T-bone steak bones given to them by our friends, I must go and cool off in the pool which has reached highs of 35°s so far… it’s warmer than our shower but I am not complaining.
Take care and remember never join dangerous cults, always practice safe sects!
