Curried Goat in a North Cyprus stew

Each month Rosy Glow shares her news, personal thoughts and intimate letters on her new life living in Northern Cyprus.

Dear Sis,
Sun, sun and more sun, our summer has truly begun and next week’s temperatures are going to be in the 40s…. that is seriously hot and not a good time to be working outdoors.

We almost had goat stew recently as Muktar’s goat came a ‘visiting again, this time trailing behind our neighbours, Warren and Karen. Karen, bless her, is a true animal lover and would happily have tethered the goat in her garden but, as usual, trusty Mustafa was asked to deal with it and he told the Muktar this would be the last time. If the goat came here again, he would end up as “Mustafa Stew”.

Rob and I, along with some friends, went to see the Rat Pack Boys at the Korinieum Golf Club recently and it was a good night out. I thought they were pretty good and to have the show, the meal, all drinks in that lovely outside setting, was well worth the TL100 per ticket. The Supper Club organises these great events and we are both looking forward to the Manhattans coming over in September. We also went to see the Gypsy Brothers in the Dolce Vita restaurant and they were just great. They sang a wide range of songs and were still going strong when we left after about 2 hours.

We seem to be at an en passé with the Indian Restaurant. There have been several articles in the local press about it but one contradicts the other so who knows what will happen. Might be, if it happens, that goat jalfrezi is offered on the menu?

A friend of ours, who lives in France but is on an epic journey across Africa with her husband, asked me when we came here if I would visit her father’s grave in the British Cemetery. Naturally I did and now do so on the anniversary of his death. This month I went along only to find the flower shop opposite the cemetery had closed. Finding the Girne Belideyre Nursery close by I went in to see if I could buy a plant. They told me it was just for the Belideyre use but once I explained why I wanted a plant, they gave me a beautiful small rose plant but would not let me pay for it! There are still some people with generous spirits in this world and I find that refreshing.

We recently had Rob’s sister and husband with us and we, and they, had a great time but I felt at times as though Hilda Baker was with us as Sue kept saying, “we went to Fumagusta today” or we are going to “Krymeria tomorrow”. It certainly made for some interesting conversations.

Sister dear, time for me to go to Esentepe and check for missing post. I am still waiting for a present which was posted on 11th May. What chances of it turning up now do you think?
Until next time do take care and ponder the question, if love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?

As ever,
Your itinerant sister
