North Cyprus Elections – LatestIn: News 18 Apr 2010
The current Turkish Cypriot president Mehmet Ali Talat (the leader of the Rupublican Turkish Party (CTP) has only 29% of the vote. This may have negative implications for the current peace talks ongoing in Cyprus. (UBD) leader Dervis Eroglu (pictured) is known to prefer a two state model for Cyprus, a solution that is much further away from the Greek Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias’s preferred resolution. The current talks are important for a number of factors, the main one being the North’s current economic and social isolation (officially it is recognised only by Turkey). It is a problem that has hampered Turkeys membership into the EU. Dervis Eroglu has said that he will be appointing a representative to accompany Talat to the talks with Christofias, a situation that will only complicate the talks already over a year old. Some progress has been made between the leaders but a solution is thought to be some way off with property rights and land disputes a major sicking point.
