North Cyprus Elections – Latest

In: News

18 Apr 2010

Election latest.
As the last few remaining votes are being counted in the election in Northern Cyprus today, it looks certain that the National Unity Party (UBD) harder line right wing party have won 44% of the total vote.

The current Turkish Cypriot president Mehmet Ali Talat (the leader of the Rupublican Turkish Party (CTP) has only 29% of the vote.

This may have negative implications for the current peace talks ongoing in Cyprus. (UBD) leader Dervis Eroglu (pictured) is known to prefer a two state model for Cyprus, a solution that is much further away from the Greek Cypriot president Dimitris Christofias’s preferred resolution.

The current talks are important for a number of factors, the main one being the North’s current economic and social isolation (officially it is recognised only by Turkey). It is a problem that has hampered Turkeys membership into the EU.

Dervis Eroglu has said that he will be appointing a representative to accompany Talat to the talks with Christofias, a situation that will only complicate the talks already over a year old. Some progress has been made between the leaders but a solution is thought to be some way off with property rights and land disputes a major sicking point.
