Mad, Dogs and an Englishwomen in a North Cyprus pool

Every month on Lincguide, Rosy Glow shares her news, personal thoughts and intimate letters on her new life living in Northern Cyprus. This month – wobbles and womance.

Dear Sis,
Well, here we are in half way through February and at long last the weather has improved. I always seem to be telling you about the weather but then, it is a British thing and I guess living in North Cyprus you are interested in our weather.

Rob and I went out for a lovely meal at Joya on Valentine’s Day. There were not many people there and I think most restaurants are counting the cost of the harshest winter (according to the locals) they have had for over 40 years. No-one wants to go out when it’s cold and wet so they stay in, become lounge lizards and break out the Efes. That option has its merits I wager.

James has kindly made a compound for the dogs for when we all have to be out of the house. He thought he had finished and we duly put the dogs in for a trial run and waited. It was not long before we saw Gracie wandering around outside the compound… she had wriggled under less than 6 inches of space. James added more wood and now it’s as good as it gets… perhaps I should have named him Joseph!

Rob and I went to Lefkosia recently to the “Ministry” responsible for our Permission to Buy. Apparently it has been granted and so, a week later, I hot footed it to the Land Registry Office in Girne, clutching my newly acquired file number, only to be told the paperwork was still in Lefkosia, in a different office of course. I was told that if it had been posted to Girne, it could take a month to get to the Land Registry Office. Can’t think why I complain about our post coming from UK.

Did I tell you that in November we had to have two new front tyres on the car because it developed a “wobble”? Well, last week, the wobble was back so Rob and I went to the tyre place only to find one of the rear tyres was not only bulbous but there was a big gash with wire sticking out. Two new rear tyres later and TL200 lighter, the wobble was gone.

Our lovely pool contractor came to see us last week; it was not really a social call but to renew our pool cleaning contract. Rob and James were going to do it themselves this year but have decided that they will take this little job on next year so another £720 will find its way out of our account. All in all it’s been an expensive month really.

I have just noted that the Kyrenia Animal Rescue is having its annual dog show on April 25th so I am seriously considering entering our pooches as they both are Rescue dogs. I reckon I could enter one or both dogs in at least ten categories so I could come home with a bagful of rosettes and just blow the competition away. I think there might be some serious dog training beginning very soon in our house. As all the money raised goes towards the KAR running costs it really is something we have put on our calendars.

Time waits for no man and my spritzer is calling so remember if you feel you over-indulged during the festive season, don’t worry, go on the 30 day diet. (I’m on it and so far I’ve lost 15 days).
