Living in Northern Cyprus

The one(s) that got away

Every month on Lincguide, Rosy Glow shares her news, personal thoughts and intimate letters on her new life living in Northern Cyprus. This month -  a goat, a flood and the police show up.

Dear Sis,
As we approach the end of January it seems as though the mail has dried up. The good fortune of receiving the mail for Christmas seems to have been just a tease. Perhaps the stagecoach broke down or maybe, just maybe, there is nothing for us but I cannot believe that, even if it’s only a bill. I am confident it will improve as it definitely cannot get any worse.

We had some “excitement” on our estate a few days ago. Sadly, it was not exciting for everyone. As I was walking the dogs I noticed that the front doors of two of the houses, owned by mainland Turkish people and rarely occupied, were ajar. To be honest, one has been open for some time and Rob and a neighbour regularly wedge it closed. We did, naturally, inform the developers but they did little. Anyway, when I got back from my walk I told Rob who rang the developers and they must have notified the police as the next day (nothing is a rush here) a police car and two constables from Esentepe pulled up and asked to speak to us. No problem as one of them spoke quite good English. Having told him my story, I was asked to make and sign a statement which I did. It would appear that in both houses, and in one on a neighbouring development, all the white goods were taken (cooker, washing machine, fridge/freezer and dishwasher if there was one). I guess there is little chance of finding the burglars but at least the police are now patrolling a little more often. Perhaps a salutary lesson to us all to be more vigilant.

Yet again we have had heavy rains and Rob and I have had to bail out the pump room. We might need to investigate some sort of overflow from the ballast tank but I think it might be a little too late and something we should have thought about and asked for before the pool was put in. Oh well, it literally is now “money down the drain”.
I am a little concerned about my Frangipani tree as it looks really bedraggled and I just hope, with all the rain we have had, the roots have not rotted and it will recover once we get some sunshine. It cost too much to just discard. Other than that, the garden is beginning to bloom and the lovely narcissi I brought back from UK, courtesy of my lovely friend Karen, are literally “blooming lovely”. A little bit of Wales right here in North Cyprus…..lush.

Earlier this week we had a real surprise when we saw a goat in the garden sauntering around as if he owned the place. I refer to it as “he” but it could just as easily have been a “she” of course. It was enormous and I did manage to get some good pictures of it as it was as tame as a tame thing and it was almost eating out of my hand. We called our trusty friend, Mustafa, who called the Muhtar and sure enough, it belonged to him so Mustafa tied it up to the railings and Muhtar came and collected later. It was great to see this beast walking on walls and coming up the front door without a care in the world. A neighbour suggested the goat might look good on the BBQ but we resisted the temptation.

Right sister, time to go but remember, lead me not into temptation, I can find it myself.
