Living in Northern Cyprus

Canada to North Cyprus: Oh Canada!

In: Out of the loop

14 Jan 2010

Over the course of 2010 we are following one families decision to move permanently from Canada to Northern Cyprus. The good things, the bad times, the problems, the hot weather we’ll have exclusive access to all the thoughts of Zalihe as her family take one giant step for mankind and find out what living in Northern Cyprus is all about.
This time: Oh Canada!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Zalihe Zafer, I was born and raised here in Canada, where it happens to be snowing. My husband is from Northern Cyprus and that is where we met about 13 years ago. I love Canada and everything about it. The summers are green, the winters, well….white. My husband, on the other hand, while loving Canada, has never really been able to leave Northern Cyprus behind. Don’t get me wrong, I also love Northern Cyprus, since my parents were from there along with my entire extended family.

My visits to Cyprus were the best times of my life. No one can argue with the fact that North Cyprus has great clubs and restaurants and the people there are truly fantastic and fun loving. But I haven’t had to work and make a living in North Cyprus. I am sure there are significant differences in how Canadian’s and Cypriot’s pass their days. This comparison has been the topic of discussion in our household since my husband arrived to Canada.

Our lives have been full, we have moved around this huge country a couple of times, I have lost a parent, and I have gained two wonderful children. We have been lucky enough to be employed for the most part, and have been able to travel quiet a bit. Overall we are the typical Canadian family. Except for on the weekends, when my husband calls his friends and family back home to have hour long conversations about how badly he wants to relocate to North Cyprus.

This past spring we all flew over to Cyprus for a holiday and to scope out the place with the idea of moving there forever. We asked all sorts of questions, and talked to young families, like ourselves to see how their lives are compared to ours. Well, in the end, we decided to give it a go! That is right! We were going to fly back home and put the house up for sale, enough was enough!
We were moving to Cyprus!
