Acapulco Santa
On Saturday night, Anna, Emma, Anthony and Matt came on stage at the Acapulco Academia room and began their Christmas by entertaining over 170 people, both ex-pats and Cypriots, with a story of Santa’s Workshop.  It would appear that all Santa’s elves are called Happy and they can only work for Santa when they become 16 and then it’s “hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to the workshop you go”.  No chance for career advancement it seems or if you long to be a nurse, forget it, the closest you will come is assembling a doll in a nurse uniform.

They opened with ‘House of Fun’, the hit for Madness from 1982, quickly followed by a medley of old favourites which included ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Silent Night’ to name but a few.
We soon learn that Santa has gone missing and it is feared he may have murdered Mrs Claus’s pet hamster Annie (surely not).  A broken window, a piece of red material and blood provided the evidence that surely Santa was guilty until proven innocent!
More old favourites followed with Abba’s ‘SOS’ and ‘I’m A Believer’, the song composed by Neil Diamond for the Monkees in 1966.
Obviously a Santa was needed urgently so four men were taken from the audience to audition for the part of the “missing Santa”.  They were tasked with warbling Ho Ho Ho and then wrapping a present as quickly as possible and the winner was Ray who took it all in his stride.  Maybe he has been a store Santa in the past.  Thankfully, the misunderstanding was soon cleared up as Annie had merely been hurt; Santa could not get in the door so broke the window and took Annie to hospital.  For some reason, the hospital was in the South and Santa was unable to come back as his Residency was not current and the customs would not allow his sleigh of presents through as he did not have the requisite In and Out forms.  Bureaucracy it seems knows no bounds, even for an old overweight man in a red suit.

During the interval, which was much too long, a collection was made for the TRNC Healthcare, a voluntary organisation made up of UK registered nurses, carers and drivers who, in a nut shell bridge the gap that the healthcare system here does not cover.   The second half saw the songsters come on stage in party gear and they opened with the Beatle’s 1967 song, ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ followed by several more Beatle numbers.

Anna was as strong as ever and was obviously the driving force behind StarFever and Emma has certainly developed her singing and style since StarFever in the summer.   As I left, the party continued to strains of The Stones and no doubt the dancing and singing went on into the small hours.
Once again, TKOD 112 will benefit with a cash donation from the proceeds of this show.
