Not following the herd in North CyprusIn: Out of the loop 15 Oct 2009
Dear Sis, The garden is almost finished now and with the exception of a few more plants for around the tree, I think we are pretty much done. We have, with the help of Mustafa, now transplanted the palms, frangipani and hibiscus trees. It was funny as Rob and James dug the holes and Mustafa said he would come and help plant. Well, he took over, told Rob he was too old to be digging and proceeded to do it almost single handed. Mustafa is 57 and Rob is 62….hmmmmmm. I went to MOT the car, which I had been told, was an easy procedure. It was very easy for me as when the girl looked at the paperwork she told me to “come back in 2011”. It seems our MOT is for 3 years. We had no idea. Still, I have been and renewed the tax which took all of 5 minutes and cost TL287 for a year. I thought that was reasonable. Recently we went to see StarFever, an evening of “intergalactic song and story”. It was good fun and as it raises money for charity it is always worth supporting. The lead female singer, Anna, was very good indeed. As you know we have lots of birds nesting in our Carob tree and now we seem to have a huge hoard of hornets. I am assured they will disappear as the colder weather comes but at the moment the bottom of the tree is like a no-go area even though they are non-aggressive. I hate the things and as soon as they are gone, I have asked Rob to really be ruthless and chop a lot of the tree. They love the sap of the carobs so I am told. While the hornets are a problem the wonderful dragonfly’s delight me every day. They are just gorgeous as their bronze wings glisten in the sunshine and you can get really close before they fly off. I watched a couple doing a rhythmic dance over the pool the other day…it was mesmerising. I have tried to photograph them a couple of times but to no avail. The other day, as I was driving into Girne, I happen to glance into a field and was rewarded with the sight of a goatherd sitting regally on a donkey, herding his goats. The man must have been at least 80 years old but was probably only 40 having had a hard life. It so typifies the languid pace of life in North Cyprus and it’s a sight I hope never disappears. Well sis, time for me to go. The weather forecasters predict some thunder and lightning and heavy rain in the coming days but I think they have lost the plot! The thing is, we do not have a forecast for our immediate area, the nearest I can find is Girne and that is 35km away and it does not always follow that the weather in Girne is the same as the weather in our neck of the woods. Anyway, right now the sun is shining and even though the pool is only 26°, I still try and go in daily. Finally sis, always remember that you are absolutely unique, just like everyone else.
