Cyprus has been divided Since 1974, there is a 112 mile long UN controlled buffer Zone. separating the Greek Cypriot south from the Turkish Cypriot north. Although progress has been very slow, the current talks are the islands best chance at resolving the split for many years. Without a definitive solution to the political problem in Cyprus, The EU will not allow Turkey to become part of the EU. (Greece is already a member). The pair are thought to be working on a two state solution, the main stumbling block being disagreements over land ownership This is also a major issue for many British residents living in Northern Cyprus.
