This months featured Restaurant has one of the best reputations in the whole of Northern Cyprus.
Situated in the old Turkish quater of Girne, Efendi is regularly booked solid and a large group of regular customers can testify to the quality of the food and the professional service. To win a fantastic dinner for 2 answer our question at the bottom of the article.
You can find out lots more about Efendi in our ‘Eating out’ section here, but we caught up with joint owner Amy and asked her where did the name Efendi come from?
“Efendi has been a restaurant for 24 years, first as rumours, then Efendi House, then we dropped the house to just Efendi, which means gentleman in Turkish.
What is your most popular dish?
“I would say that all of our dishes are as popular as each other but if i had to choice one, it would have be a toss up between the King prawns on horseback chargrilled with bacon, sweet chilli & garlic butter with fresh lemon, or the Tender, thinly sliced breast of duck served on mixed Leaves & fresh orange segments with a honey, oyster sauce and Dijon drizzle.
What made you open a restaurant in Northern Cyprus?
“Andy (joint owner) has been coming here for the past 25 years as his mother lives here. It seemed to be a good idea to go into hospitality and catering. I would say that we enjoy the relaxed way of life, climate (not July or Aug though), views, living near the sea and a safe environment for our son to grow up in.”
Sounds delicious, what is the secret to Efendi’s success?
“The secret of success is good team work, creating a great atmosphere, delicious food with relaxed and attentive service.” Recently a couple were so impressed with Efendi and the welcome they received they wrote a poem all about the place.
Efendi
“We are tanned & chilled & glad to be here
Smell the lamb shank, inhale the atmosphere!
Off the beaten track now, please don’t take Efendi
Thai chicken curry, tiger prawns or pork fillet
Staff was all twisting & no hint of façade.
We met them next day in their pink courtyard
We said we’d come back for the pate and toast,
We couldn’t resist the inviting host
This time we tried the delicious desserts
We are always leaving feeling alive and alert
We wined & dined with Marilyn Monroe
We surfed the net for a dance gigolo!
Thank you so much for the food & the laughs
We’ll be back in 3o years & take you to a dinner and dance”
So there you go, when was the last time you enjoyed a meal so much you wrote a poem about it?

To win dinner for two and a bottle of house wine at Efendi, just answer this simple question,
What are “Angels on horseback”?
**This competition is now closed, congratulations to prize winner Kenneth Earley**
