Cyprus EarthquakeIn: News 25 Aug 2009For those of you living in Northern Cyprus you may have felt a jolt this morning as you enjoyed your cornflakes. Cyprus was hit by a minor Earthquake. The quake hit at 9:30am and was felt right across the island with Nicosia bearing the most severe movement. It measured 4.5 on the Richter scale, no damage has been reported. The epicentre was in the sea close to the Amathounta coast. The biggest earthquakes can measure up to 9 on the richter scale, small tremors are frequent in Cyprus and there are up to 100 per year. On October 9, 1996, an earthquake measuring 6.8 occurred in the sea south west of Cyprus, this earthquake caused some damage to buildings mostly in the southern area of Cyprus around Paphos and Limassol.
