Wine in Northern (and Southern) Cyprus Wine has been made in Cyprus for over four thousand years and is even
mentioned in the Bible. While the south is the dominating area in this field,
new and exciting wines are appearing from passionate and dedicated growers
in the North. The areas poor reputaion for wine is being replaced by new
facilities, techniques and growers, putting Cyprus firmly on the
world wine map.
Here is a quick guide to some of the best:
Commandaria (or Commanderia; Greek: Κουμανδαρία)
This wine is a sweet dessert wine made in the foothills of the Troodos
mountains. Produced from sun-dried grapes of the varieties Xynisteri
and Mavro. This white wine has been around since 800 BC. It is infact
the oldest named wine still in production anywhere on the planet.
Villa Doluca White
Although produced in Turky, the Villa Doluca vineyards wine is
incredibly well known. They produce 10 million bottles every year and
also make excellent reds and rosés .
The Villa Doluca White variety is a dry white wine and one the best of the region.
Lambouri Organic Pure White
A fresh, fruity white wine made with the Xynisteri grape grown at a
high altitude, this variety is indigenous to Cyprus. Recommended to be
served with fish and light pastas. Perfect with lunch before your
afternoon nap.
Cornetto
A delicious light and fresh rosé from the same Kolios vineyards as the fine red Saint Fotios.
Have it with fish, meat or from behind dark sunglasses with a sandwich in the sun.
