National Unity Party (UBP) wins Election
Last nights elections were won by right-wing National Unity Party (UBP). The party won 44% of the vote.
Current President and Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat who came in with 29% will continue as 'president' of North Cyprus, his position is not up for re-election until April 2010.
It is thought most Turkish-Cypriots felt current rising prices and problems with jobs were the deciding factor in their victory.
Repercussions of the win may have a negative effect on the talks with Greek Cypriot leader, President Dimitris Christofias to solve the 'divided' island issue. Nationalist UBP party leader Derviş Eroğlu, has said he will be pressing for international recognition for the breakaway state.
Mr Talat will now be joined by a representative of Nationalist UBP party leader Derviş Eroğlu in future negotiations with Greek Cypriot leader, President Dimitris Christofias. This may potenitially add a further complication to the myriad of issues the pair have yet to agree on during the last 6 months of talks.
