Travelling to Northern Cyprus
Direct flights are not currently allowed to Northern Cyprus. To reach North Cyprus travelers must either fly into Paphos or Larnaca in the south or into Turkey. The travelling time is approx 4.5 hours to each from the UK.
Some flights to North Cyprus via Turkey however remain on the ground only for a short period and then resume their journey to the north of the island (Ercan) keeping travelling time to a minimum.
This is a legal requirement at present but would change should the island join the EU.
Travellers coming from Turkey have several choices in airports as scheduled
flights can be found from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Adana and Antalya.
North Cyprus Airport Ercan is clean and new, flights to there from the UK are scheduled through two airlines. If you fly into the south crossing the border is straighforward, however you may have to get a taxi as car hire insurance in the south may not cover you in the north. Some firms will come and pick you up.
Travelling to and from Turkey to Cyprus by passenger and car ferry is quite easy. The ships leave a small port on the Mediterranean side of Turkey called Silifke and disembark in Girne. Faster catamarans also leave Girne for the Turkish coast several times a day. Travelers can expect a two hour catamaran ride. Car ferries are a longer at four to five hours.
The service is run by Fergun shipping

Many UK residents make the trip every 3 months to have their passport stamped to avoid becoming an official permanent resident.
