Hunting and Fishing in Northern Cyprus
Hunting
Hunting is available for residents and those who come to live in North Cyprus. The most common hunts are hare, pigeon and partridge. The hunting season runs from October to February and is only allowed on Sunday.
Hunting is heavily regulated by the Interion Ministry and all hunters must be licensed.
The law covers Game and Wild Bird Law and includes:
Hunting Animals include black partridge, pheasant, chukar partridge, snipe, quail, turtle dove and graylag.
Hunting small birds using lime is permitted in North Cyprus however it is being protested by a conservation group who are concerned that small migratory birds are the target of these hunters.
Fishing
Fishing is a natural pastime in Cyprus. But for a successful day of fishing the deep sea waters of the Mediterranean may offer more to the savvier angler.
Remarkably the fishing along the coast of Cyprus is not as active as one would think as the waters do not provide fish with the necessary nutrients for them to nurture. A seasoned angler can always find his catch whatever the challenge but for those less patient it is probably best to find a fishing boat in the Kyrenia harbor and invite himself aboard.
Fishing boats which provide fishing trips out to sea are plentiful in the harbor. With nearly perfect weather on any given day, nothing usually stands in the way of a good fishing trip. Out to sea the angler can expect to find anything from mackerel to sea bass, cod, eel, tuna or swordfish.
The Head Office of the Fisheries Department and Marine Research in Lefkosa regulates the waters on the island. Some fishing is allowed in the island reservoirs but a permit is required.
If you prefer targets there are rifle ranges run by thr Turkish Republic of North Cyprus Shooting Federation at Gonyeli and Famagusta. There is also a Girne gun club.
